Biography

Nobody registered Nyx Carter. She appears in the League's records the way a draught appears in a locked room — after the fact, and only because something is missing. The paperwork that should explain where she came from has been filled in twice, by two different hands, and neither version survives a second reading.

She is a thief first and a fighter second, and she is very good at both. The blade system she fights with was built by someone else, for someone else, and she has never pretended otherwise. She is a shadow holding somebody else's knife. More than one competitor in this tournament entered specifically because she is in it.

She has no cause. She is not avenging anyone and she is not saving anyone. The Danger Zone is the richest, least-supervised room in Velmora, full of powerful people who are all looking at each other — and she has spent her whole life walking into rooms exactly like that and leaving lighter than she arrived.

Everyone in here is guarding something. That's how I know what's worth taking.
